The First Family of New York

Natural Power: The First Family of New York by:Ayanna Yaya Kinky, loc’d, braided, twisted, ‘Fro-nominal thickness, “natural” hair has always made a political statement in American culture and most significantly in the African American community. In the ‘60s- ‘70s being “natural” and rocking an afro represented an awareness, a pride, and courage to be your true self. That same sentiment can also be attributed to the newly-elected First Family of Americas favorite City. Allow me to introduce you to New York City’s new Mayor, Bill de Blasio and his family. He is a white male, born and raised in New York; a progressive thinker, public advocate and a liberal Democrat. She is his wife of 20 years, Chirlane McCray, an African American woman, outspoken feminist, activist, and writer, who was one of first to publicly out herself as a lesbian in the leading Black women publication, Essence Magazine. The odd couple met while both working for former NY Mayor, David Dinkins. The two met and de Blasio describes it as “love at first sight.” At least it was for him anyway ;) It took McCray a little while longer to know, but she eventually fell in love and now has […]

Doctor Locs

Doctor Locs (Dr. Locs) Grooming Conditioner is a product you can use for your (dreds or) locs for the ultimate oil treatment (essential oils), refreshing feeling (tea tree oil), yet light feel. Your locs should never feel heavy or look flaky. The Grooming Conditoner goes against the grain. Right now, the loc community uses creams to groom. Doctor Locs’ line uses a more worry free method discovered by The Natural Hair Lady (a natural hair stylist and loctician in Atlanta GA). All her clients use this line to eliminate the issue of build-up commonly found inside of locs (due to using a cream to groom). There will be a Youtube video soon to cover many of your questions.

Esperanza Spalding on Dave Letterman – Natural Hair

I had my popcorn tonight watching The First Lady, Michelle Obama grace the set with Dave Letterman. She’s so eloquent. Before Michelle, there were only two women I could put on the pedestal for being most in tuned to their powers as a woman: my Grandmother and Felicia Rashaad’s role as ‘Claire Huxtable.’ Esperanza Spalding did her thing on the base, free styling a ginormous afro and sprinkling a jazzy spiritual for the first time, “Radio Song,” throughout the New York crowd. I’m so happy she decided to rock it old school disco style. So many new naturals are not comfortable with wearing their natural “real natural.” No roller set. No “curly kinky crinckled tickled and slightly pickled cream” added. I loved it. The more something like this is adored, the more it’ll be excepted psychologically in “our” brains ladies. The African American woman has gone on many roads, rivers, and flights with her hair. Now I understand everyone in the world isn’t going to be natural; it’s still nice to see change.

Loc Extensions Vflyer

(Dred) Loc Extensions in Atlanta Location: Roswell Historic Area Loc extensions are more common than—-say 10 years ago. I tell people, if you can tell that they are “fake” then run. Actually, I find a lot more dreadheads have loc extensions than you think. The thing thing is—–they’re undetectable. Loc extensions allow you to walk out the door with locs without the “in between phase” or as some refer to as “the ugly phase.” It’s pretty liberating. Your corporate boss won’t give you the questionable look of “whatcha got going on here, now?” Loc Extensions with The Natural Hair Lady – Chimere My loc extensions come with a 6 month warranty on them. This warranty covers any faulty work that—-you and I both—-do not want to happen. Any faulty work is covered by myself for no cost. I give steps and guidelines to my clients to follow so that your locs are healthy, strong, and natural looking for life. You can wash, style, and go along with your life as normal with loc extensions. There’s absolutely no additional hair needed afterwards. You can go to across country for loc grooming and that loctician would not need to know or give […]
